10 AMZING THINGS ABOUT THE OCEAN YOU DIDNT KNOW
1# The majority of life on Earth is aquatic.
As so much of the Earth’s surface is underwater, it comes as no surprise that marine species outnumber those on land. But, it’s an incredible 94 per cent of the Earth’s living species that exist within the oceans.
2#More historic artifacts underwater than all the world’s museums.
Around 1,000 shipwrecks lie off the Florida Keys alone, some of which are within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Other underwater museums have been created in recent years, including the Mediterranean’s submerged bronze statue, Christ of the Abyss. Historic underwater monuments such as Ancient Underwater City Of Pavlopetri or the Bimini Road Bahamas or ‘Britain’s Atlantis’ Doggerland are other amazing examples.
3# We don't know much about most marine life!
When it comes to exploring the oceans of our planet Earth, its sheer size and water pressure limits our exploration abilities. The general science community and experts in the field estimate we have only discovered one-third of the potential marine life species in our oceans. Whilst a majority of such ocean life forms are likely to be smaller organisms, sceitics hope that there are whales or even mammals that have existed since prehistoric times still here in the depths.
We know more about Mars than we do our own oceans.Scientists aren't even close to having fully mapped and explored the entire sea floor of the earth. According to NASA, only 5 to 10% of the oceans' depths have been surveyed by traditional sonar tech. The BIG question is of course why? Well, the process is not only vastly time consuming but also vastly expensive. Yet, with Mars to date, we have successfully mapped the largest areas of the red planet, despite it being 225 million kilometers from Earth!
4# Oceans produce more than 70% of our atmosphere's oxygen supply!
Looking at the absolutely grotesque amount of garbage and pollution we abuse our oceans with, it's seriously hard to believe we could abuse such a vital natural resource in such a way knowing its importance to our very existence. Scientists agree that there are oxygen oceans plants in one of every five breaths of air we take. Scientists believe Phytoplankton contribute 70-80% of the oxygen in Earth's atmosphere. The exact figure cannot be applied since we know the exact amount of oxygen a single phytoplankton cell will release, it's impossible to state the amount of phytoplankton cells throughout the earth's oceans.
5# Most of the Ocean is Black
We all know, especially as scuba divers that water absorbs light. What you may not know is that sunlight at the most, can travel only to about 1000 meters, and that's only under the right conditions. Generally speaking though, most light penetrating beyond the euphotic, commonly referred to as the light zone (200meters and up) leaves the twilight zone, also known as the Disphotic zone, mostly in the dark with sunlight rapidly depleting into the total darkness.6# Coral produces its own sunscreen.
Too much sunlight can damage the algae that live inside coral in shallow water. To protect the algae, which are a main source of sustenance for the coral, the corals fluoresce. This creates proteins that act as a sort of sunscreen for the algae.
7# The Bloop
The Bloop, the loudest sound ever captured underwater! is it still a mystery to today!?
Back in 1997, an exceptional loud noise was recorded by scientists by mistake. The sound baffled scientists for more than 15years. This sound was so loud that hydrophones over 3 thousand miles away captured the same sound. It became known formally as the Bloop.
After 15 years, the NOAA concluded that the noise came from an icequake, which is when seismic activities cause a break in frozen ground. However, many people still question this conclusion, and The Bloop is the source of many conspiracy theories to this day.
8# The planet's longest mountain range is underwater and is 10 times longer than the Andes
The longest mountain range above water is the Andes, which is about 4,300 miles long. The actual longest mountain range on Earth, however, is the Mid-Oceanic Ridge, which snakes between all continents and clocks in at around 40,390 miles long.
9# The Pacific is wider than the moon.
At its widest point, from Indonesia all the way to Colombia, the Pacific Ocean is wider than the moon, by quite a lot. This expanse of ocean is 12,300 miles across, which is more than five times the diameter of the moon!
10# More people have been to the moon than to the Mariana Trench.
The Mariana Tranch is the deepest know part of our Ocean. Its located just southeast of the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Its greatest known ocean depth is 36,201 feet (11,034 m) at the Challenger Deep, which was discovered by HMS Challenger II in 1948. In human history, one dozen people have set foot on the moon, but just three people have managed to make it to the Mariana Trench, because of the extreme conditions there. One of those people? Director James Cameron. That means we know about the moon than our own oceans!!!
